Eva stared at the assembled gods and goddesses surrounding her, the exact same ones that she'd helped in both big and little ways over the past year. She listened to their words and began wondering exactly why she even cared. It wasn't like any of them really cared about her.
Okay, that was stupid thinking. Hades and Persephone were both sitting right there fighting for her, and so were the others. Yet, there were at least a dozen others who wanted her to leave. How did Eva know? They kept flat-out saying that Eva shouldn't be allowed to remain in Surprise.
"I'm tired," she said while Athena took a break in her tirade.
Every single set of eyes in the room swiveled over to her, and Eva wanted to shrink back into herself.
Instead, she lifted her chin and squared her shoulders.
"I have no reason to hide who I am." Eva felt something strange fill her bones, something she hadnât felt before. It was exhilarating. "I'm not ashamed of what I've done in Surprise. I'm not the person you expect me to be, but that doesn't mean that I'm not helping either. It doesn't mean that I'm not a person, or one of you."
Her voice trembled, but Eva could feel strength filtering through.
The door opened, jarring Eva out of her thoughts and her speech. She watched as Mnemosyne walked into the room with every indication that she belonged.
"What are you doing here?" Aphrodite asked, clearly annoyed.
"Maybe you've forgotten, child." Mnemosyne spit venom at the goddess of love. "I don't answer to you. I don't answer to any of you. My power existed long before you ever took your first breath in your first life. I'll live long after your last breath, too." She brushed past the affronted woman and came to stand at Eva's side.
"I think," Mnemosyne said while addressing Zeus. "It's time that someone with influence and power spoke about Eva."
Hera, the last person that Eva expected, rose from her seat and swept forward.
"Nem," she said on a sob. Then Hera threw her arms around the goddess of memory and pulled her into a hug so tight that Eva could feel the obvious affection between the two women.
"I'm so sorry," Hera whispered. "I know what you're going through."
Mnemosyne sniffled, and Eva coughed to cover it up for her. She might not be able to do much for her friend. Still she could make sure that her friend wasn't exposed for crying in a room full of people just looking for a weakness that they could take advantage of.
"I don't think she should be allowed to testify," Aphrodite persisted.
Eva turned to her and raised an eyebrow. "You know what, Aphrodite?" Evaâs anger was showing though she'd never shown another human being it before, let alone a goddess that might be able to take revenge on her. Especially one that was known for taking insult at the smallest thing.
"What?" Aphrodite didn't even meet her eyes.
Eva didn't have to say anything, though. In the next instant, Hephaestus picked up his wife over his shoulder and walked out with a smile on his face.
